Working Life of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Join Richest 10%, Report Reveals

According to recent study, the average employee in the UK would need half a century of income to achieve the financial standing of the richest 10% nationwide.

Growing Wealth Gap Over Time

This research examined wealth distribution statistics including the recent health crisis years and discovered that back in 2006-08, it would have taken 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert associated with the analysis observed: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would remain unable to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The study revealed that the difference between the wealth of the median citizen and a person belonging to the richest segment was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had increased to 1.3 million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.

The economist added: "These differences are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is low – individuals who begin life affluent tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Even with the economic divide expanding in actual numbers, the percentage of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the most affluent homes – termed "relative wealth inequality" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," according to the research.

During this period, overall assets in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Drivers of Financial Divide

Referred to as "automatic" appreciation, via rising house prices and variations in pension valuations, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, per the report.

These gains generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the research shows – worsening the intergenerational wealth divide.

Age-Based Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Variations

There were also significant regional variations, with the average level of wealth in 2020-22 reaching £290,000 in south-east England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Effects

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were protected by the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows numerous families were able to save, increasing their wealth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 during the COVID years (across the pandemic timeframe), approximately equivalent to the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the average household in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
