As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
