Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
