British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
