A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
